Welcome to the people of Prince George!
Many of you are familiar to the blog "People of New York". In my travels across this great big city I find that there are many amazing people in the confines of our beautiful city. In the future I would like to get permission to take a picture and most people are provided an option to read my post prior to publishing.
Today I would like to talk about Ted. Ted is an intellect, a spiritual seeker (on the path of healing) and an introvert with a fantastic beard. I must say it was his beard that initially attracted me to him as well as his work ethic. I visit the pools most days and I see him pounding on the treadmill. He usually is already on the treadmill when I arrive and more often than not still running when I leave the gym to go to the pool side. Today I decided to start up a conversation with him in the hot tub.
In a matter of minutes he opened up and told me all about his life. I don't want to focus on what Ted does for a job because for Ted it is just that it's a means to an end. Something that pays his bills and keeps a roof over his head. What he really enjoys is having a good intellectual discussion. He is self taught in this skill as when he was growing up education was not valued. He has what my friend Dave called intuitive intellect. What drives him is a desire to pursue knowledge for knowledge sake. He is not interested in a having a degree on the wall but I am curious if that might change if he earned a degree in philosophy.
Ted has a high level of self awareness. Like most people Ted has had some struggles in his life. He told me of making some headway in 2001 and then losing ground and falling back into old patterns. Six months ago he got things back on track and that is why he spends so much time on the treadmill every day and then spends time in the pool. He also tells me that it was difficult to start coming to the pool because it was such a social place. This action took him out of his funk and got him exposed to the outside world. When he started he didn't engage or talk with most people. He ignored them and stayed in his own world. Now that he is feeling better about himself and is more in control off the negative self talk he is able to have conversation with others, especially fellow travellers who have a predilection for hirsute endeavours. (You might have to look that one up.)
Ted confirms to me my theory about post traumatic growth. What doesn't kill you, doesn't kill you. (ha ha) Sometimes life is just about surviving each day. After surviving there may come a time when you ask yourself seriously "now what"? I would like this blog to inspire the curious and let you know you are not alone. It has been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. My encouragement to you is to try sometime different but as Ted has showed us it is also about creating a healthy routine and maintaining the routine while you ask yourself these important questions about growth, resiliency and perseverance. You might just change your life and make the world a better place.
